Community Action

A glimpse at what your professional firefighters do in the communities, aside from our daily duty to protect and serve. Your firefighters have many programs that they participate in and support. The communities have supported us on so many occasions, and IAFF Local 2878 is proud to support them in many ways. The following is a brief list of the Public Relations Committee’s work:
Your professional firefighters have installed food bank collection boxes at each fully staffed station – the food goes to local food banks in North Bend, Carnation and Issaquah. We give an annual donation of $500 to each of the three food banks, as well.
We send firefighters to a weeklong Muscular Dystrophy Association camp each year. We also have an annual MDA "Fill the Boot" drive, and this year we raised nearly $20,000 for MDA in the name of Eastside Fire & Rescue.
We do a "Give Burns the Boot" campaign every year. All money donated goes directly to the Northwest Burn Foundation. Two of your firefighters, Ben Lane & Mark Leroy, have participated in the annual WSCFF firefighter calendar.
Your professional firefighters annually donate six (6) $500 scholarships to our local high schools. The schools are Skyline, Issaquah High, Liberty High, Mt. Si, Cedarcrest High and Eastlake High.
We buy Engine Trading Cards to give to kids. Each Trading Card has a special safety message. The front of the card showcases your apparatus and Eastside Fire & Rescue.
We buy and distribute Bic pens to the community. Each pen has a safety message that states, "Smoke Detectors Save Lives." If you would like some of these pens, please contact me and I will ensure you receive them.
We conduct a semi-annual roadside garbage cleanup. Our section of road is SE 20 Street, from 228 Ave SE to 212 Ave SE in the city of Sammamish.
We encourage the professional firefighters to stop at car wash fundraisers in the fire engine and have the kids wash the engine. We give them a donation for their cause and the children get a kick out of it. This also offers us an opportunity to speak with the adults and answer any questions they might have about their fire department.
We produce a web site with a link to the department’s web site. This is a new web site that you may view at: www.iafflocal2878.com.
Please leave feedback with the web master.
We send two firefighters, representing Eastside Fire & Rescue and IAFF Local 2878, to any firefighter funeral in the U.S. resulting from a multiple firefighter, line-of-duty death.
On occasion, we cook dinner for community members as a donated item to local organizations, e.g., Kiwanis auctions, PTA auctions.
Every year we compete in the Stair Climb at the Bank of America building in Seattle. The money we raise is donated to the fight for a cure for leukemia.
